IGNITE. INNOVATE. INVIGORATE.
A UNIQUELY AFRICAN TECH INCUBATOR.

APPROACH

Merely by virtue of its location we knew this project had to be a uniquely African masterpiece. Woven into the creative landscape of Lagos, ‘Itanna’ was located close to National Theatre Iganmu, home to Nigeria’s legacy of cultural and creative flair. The project was intended as a tech incubator for a company’s yearly retreat, requiring both individual and collective spaces that would inspire creativity.

The Yoruba word ‘Itanna’ means ignition or spark. It was crucial for the space to possess a fiery warmth, conducive for the innovation and creation that the space was intended for. Thematically, we were drawn to the colour red for brightness and spark.
Additionally, we drew inspiration from African Fractals  and their frequent occurrence in our daily culture exemplified by plaited hair or woven baskets.

The Ancient Benin Kingdom was another resource of inspiration for the structuring and layout of the space as seen by the futuristic tunnel demarcating inner and outer spaces, just as it was in the Ancient Benin palaces. To contrast the fiery red, we used dark chocolate brown accents as well as striking pieces of art to both complement and cool the space, inspiring creativity and calm at the same time.
